A Summary of the Libraries and Museums Technology Working Group (LAM.TWG)
The (LAM.TWG) stands for the Libraries and Museums Technology Working Group and their website can be found at ImmersiveEducation.org/GROUPS/LAM. The organization's main goal is to develop the use of virtual libraries and museums through the virtual world environment. This group is headed by Jerome Yavarkovsky of the Immersive Education Initiative and Melissa Carrillo of the Smithsonian Latino Center.
As we all know, the world is evolving into a deep digital age, and it's impacting all aspects of life. This is impacting how we consume data and our libraries are feeling this shift into a more collaborative and multimedia rich experience. Although our libraries have become much more technical in the past couple of years, they are becoming outdated, due to the physical and static nature that they represent. The LAM.TWG's goal is to utilize virtual worlds and immersive education to evolve information and the future use of libraries.
The group hopes to captivate individuals through the use gaming and 3D technology to present museum objects. These 3D museum artifacts and paintings are then linkable, and provide even more information which opens up new resources and learning tools. This helps librarians who face an increasing challenge in the evolving digital sources they use and make available.
This could ultimately be a new standard of learning and collaboration that could enhance the way we use information for students and professionals alike. The full use of virtual worlds has not yet been realized so this idea of immersive libraries and museums is one that will grow as time goes on.
